Penzion Lectar: 200 years of tradition hidden in the heart of Radovljica

Visiting Radovljica is not just a walk through a beautiful medieval old town, but a journey through time, where Slovenian tradition, cuisine, and artisanal heritage merge into a unique experience. At the very heart of the town stands Restaurant & Pension Lectar, a house with a long standing tradition, more than just a building, it is a story of love for culture, local flavors, and warm hospitality.

From manor outbuilding to symbol of Radovljica

Gostilna Lectar opened in 1822 when its then-owner, Anton Rabič, started running a restaurant in the spaces of a former bakery, candle workshop, and gingerbread (lect) workshop. But the story began even earlier. In 1766, Jakob Krivic opened a lect, honey, and candle workshop in this house. The name Lectar comes from this very craft.

Handmade lect gingerbreads, especially the famous lect hearts, have become symbols of Radovljica and broader Slovenian cultural heritage. The house was originally built as an auxiliary building of the Radovljica Manor and is one of the few buildings that survived the great fire of 1835, when almost all of Radovljica burned down. While wooden floors and roofs of the town were lost to the flames, the Lectar House, covered with tiles, endured as a symbol of resilience.

Why the lect heart Is more than just gingerbread

When talking about Lectar, one cannot ignore the symbol known worldwide as thelect heart. It is not just gingerbread, it is a symbol of love, respect, and Slovenian identity. Even today, Lectar produces them using traditional methods, just as in the past. At the Museum of Old Slovenian Crafts, visitors can see the entire process of making lect, offering a small, hands-on history lesson. With prior registration, you can also try making your own lect heart, an experience locals describe as “prav fletna” (really nice). More information about this offering can be found here.

A museum where time smells of honey and cinnamon

Visiting the museum in Lectar House is not just about viewing exhibits, it is an experience. The presentation of the old gingerbread-making process allows you to step out of the modern world for a few moments and feel the rhythm of past centuries. The gingerbreads, which today are prized as souvenirs, are still made with the same respect as in the past. In addition to classic shapes, custom lect can be made in any form, size, color, or with inscriptions, making them popular as corporate or promotional gifts.

The aroma and flavor of homemade cuisine

The restaurant in Lectar House represents a Slovenian inn shaped over decades. The cuisine is based on homemade preparation, tried and tested recipes, and authentic flavors. The menu includes traditional Slovenian dishes such as beef soup with semolina dumplings, mushroom soup served in a bread bowl, Carniolan sausage with sauerkraut and roasted potatoes, and seasonal meat dishes like veal roast or stew. House specialties also include game goulash with Idrija dumplings and homemade desserts, with the Lectar strudel and Prekmurska gibanica, which is distinguished by a certificate and a gold award. The restaurant maintains the character of a classic Slovenian tavern, with the emphasis on food, space, and service, which have changed little over time.
